A grandfather has experienced a holiday of sun, sea, sand and self-discovery.

Peter Knee travelled to Greece in an attempt to find the mother he had never met.

The 56-year-old was told aged ten that he was adopted at birth and he grew up not knowing who his real parents were.

The first piece of that jigsaw was put together about 20 years ago when Mr Knee got in contact with his blood father in Norfolk who told him about his real mother.

The British Army officer and the Greek holidaymaker had met in Israel and moved to live in Hove for about seven years before splitting up in 1954.

His father told him that he thought Mr Knee’s mother lived in Kos and so in September last year Mr Knee headed out to Greece to try and find her.

After initially running into dead ends trawling through public records, his friends arranged for him to go on a local radio station to tell his story.

Within an hour of the story being broadcast, residents on nearby island Ikaria said they knew where his mother lived.

The next day, the mother and son who had last seen each other 56 years ago were reunited.

Sports therapist Mr Knee, of Findon Road, Worthing, said: “It has been a real rollercoaster."
