I DON’T see what all the fuss is about regarding the new Brighton and Hove Green council’s proposal to put a 20mph speed limit on its roads.

Here in Portsmouth, we have had such a limit since 2009.

But we don’t have Green councillors, so it doesn’t look especially radical!

SO, NO great surprise to learn that parking is “high on the agenda” for the Greens (The Argus, May 16).

The problem for the Greens is that, somehow, they have to find the money to pay for the “aspirations” set out in their manifesto.

These include more pay for council workers (bad luck for the private sector), turning the Old Steine and The Level into one big park (bad luck for visitors and business people who drive into Brighton), and more on-street cycle parking (bad luck for motorists and residents).

They can’t raise council tax so, apart from borrowing money, which would be bad for taxpayers when we have to pay it back, things like parking charges will be a prime target.

It is interesting to see that the Greens will look at “best practice” elsewhere.

Let’s hope they don’t follow the lead of Westminster Council, which is thinking of doubling parking charges for second cars owned by householders.

The Greens wouldn’t do that, would they?
