One of Europe’s most wanted women was arrested while teaching at a Sussex college.

Former court judge Antonia Ilia, 52, was caught at City College Brighton and Hove after Interpol tipped off Sussex Police.

Ilia had been convicted in her absence of fraud in Greece, and was wanted under five European arrest warrants.

She was living under the name of Antonia Jamin in a flat in Por tland Road while teaching adult language classes at the college.

A woman of the same name had also been teaching at Portslade Community College in Chalky Road, Por tslade, and an Antonia Jamin also adver tised private French and Greek teaching for children on the internet, claiming to be a French native.

The Argus has been unable to confirm if that Jamin was the wanted woman.

Sussex Police say they have confirmed the woman they have arrested is the wanted judge, Ilia.

They are understood to have found her passport and Greek identity card in the flat.

Greece’s Hellenic Police passed intelligence about her address to the Serious Organised Crime Agency via Interpol.

Warrants were handed to Sussex Police who arrested her at the college in Pelham Street, Brighton, at about 6.30pm on Wednesday.

The arrest was carried out by local uniformed officers.

It is understood there was no violence or damage.

Ilia appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Thursday.

She was remanded in custody until a hearing yesterday.

If she is extradited, Sussex Police will escort her to a UK airport to hand her over to Greek police.

A spokesman for City College, Brighton and Hove, said: “We can confirm that a part-time lecturer working four hours per week delivering adult French classes, was arrested on Wednesday evening by Sussex Police.

“The college takes matters such as this very seriously and we are assisting the relevant authorities with their enquiries.

“At the present time, we are unable to disclose any further information, due to confidentiality.”
