Pupils in gun scare at Falmer school

Pupils were kept in their classrooms after a gunman was spotted outside their school.

Police launched an armed response after three men, including one who was believed to be armed, were seen near Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA), in Falmer yesterday afternoon.

A member of staff at the former Falmer High School dialed 999 after seeing the men and pupils were ushered into their classrooms.

But when the police helicopter located the men it was discovered the gunman was using a legal air rifle to hunt rabbits.

Pupils reported seeing the weapon fired at the school fence but police said they could not confirm the claim.

The mother of a 13-year-old pupil said: “My son said it was a boy chasing three rabbits with a gun.

“He apparently fired the gun and a lot of pupils saw it.

“It is really worrying. I’m really worried about how this could have happened.”

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “Police were called to the Lewes Road area of Falmer yesterday afternoon following a report that three men had been seen in the area carrying a suspected firearm.

“Firearms officers attending the scene following the call at 2.30pm and the men were quickly located at 2.55pm with the help of police helicopter.”

“The men were in possession of an air rifle. They were spoken to by officers and they were given strong words of advice.

“At no point was anyone threatened with a firearm and no offences were identified.”

A school spokesman said: “The police were called to an incident adjacent to the BACA site this afternoon. This incident did not involve any student or staff member.

“As a result, all students were kept in their classrooms, where they were safe and secure. “Once the police advised the site was safe, which was just after the normal academy closing time, the students were released to go home.”

I do have a grudging sense of sympathy for Ms Roberts, these stories have to be reported as they are 'news' in as much as the people who would have seen the ARU attending the school would have been worried even though nothing actually happened and it's the paper's responsibility to tell them what's going on.
Perhaps she should just publish as "An Argus Reporter" until she's graduated onto The Death Knock.

Mother say she really worried about how this could have happened..
She joking ?? She lives and sends her son to a school on the edge of a farming area..
Farmers use guns for pest control and have done so for generations..
Blimey, when i was 13 i could reverse a tractor thru a field gateway AND i was a good shot with an airgun - we all were..
Tho i dont know Falmer that well i'd bet the farm was there long ever before the school was built..
Watch out luvv - there's cows in that field.. Mind they don't stampede lol..

seen the lads up there before doubt they have permission as I met the bloke who raises a few pheasants and his shooting rights run out at the back of sussex uni. But hardly a massive crime.
Chinese whispers was in was a gun at moulescomb primary and then it was a rocket launcher:)

I have a daughter at the school and hearing about firearms being seen was very scary. The teachers have not even mentioned about the incident and we didnt know if our daughter was safe untill she arrived home.
Guns kill even trained firearms experts have been known to make mistakes.
The police might as well put a notice up in this paper saying anyone who wants to do some shooting go to baca school and enjoy yourselfs!
Incompetent!

First there is no farmland and the rifle was fired. Why these men decided to 'hunt for rabbits' so close to the school and a time when the pupils were leaving is crazy!

Falmer, Do your homework, at the back of the school are the woods and farmers fields, just right for a spot of hunting. They were all around 19 years old. I guess you never did anything without thinking ? A drama out of nothing

It wasn't a farmer, it was a pikey. They have camped up at Falmer on two sites. Personally, I don't have a problem with this so long as they leave the place tidy when they leave, but going round shooting rabbits near a school is not acceptable.

as an ex-pupil at falmer high school, i can safely say there is no farm by the school.... just train tracks at the back (where the rabbits make their homes) and also, great comments tom servo and in my words a total load of nonsense..... whether there are rabbits there or not with all the recent gun crimes commited it aint really great to bring a "legal air rifle" to a school of 11-16 year olds. my younger brother attends this school and was terrified at the fact there were 3 men with a gun outside his place of learning. i'd pay to see you poo your pants over something so terrifying!!!!!

I have two children at the school and all i can say is well done to the teachers for dealing with the situation in a calm matter so that the pupils didn't get scared. Whether or not it was only an air rifle the fact that some idiot went near a school firing one off just shows their mentality. I'm glad the police were called to deal with them because it could of been worse and it could of been a real bullet. Better to be safe than sorry as they say. So well done the school for reacting the way they did.

Diffrent spot then prats deserve to lose their toy. You need permission to go bunny bashing. Doing it in front of an occupied school is the heart of stupidity.
A complete false alarm but then police had no real option till they caught these prats.

For all you prats that do have kids, a little punctuation and literacy when typing and hopefully your kids wont grow up to be equally illiterate.

Also when referring to yourself you might want to use a capital "I", and sum is spelt "some".

The train tracks are in front of the school, the woods and fields are behind. There is a passing into the woods before you get to close to the school. They were not pikeys. My child attends the school and I live in the area. It was over and done with in half an hour roughly so it was a drama over nothing.

Well of course it was, some people like to be hysterical for the sake of it. Any bit of drama to spice up their lives.

Perhaps I have Bi-polar symptoms, as I had my anger management under control and its now gone again.

I suspect that if I had the ability to focus just a few brain cells effectively, I'd realise that by not 'scratching the itch' it might go away sooner. However as you can see from the above I haven't quite grasped that concept yet.
