A ten-year-old girl who took an open bag of Haribo to school was unaware a bag of cocaine had been left inside it.

The pupil at Southdown Junior School in Newhaven thought the drug was sherbert wrapped in cling film.

Her teacher spotted the white powder and took it off her immediately.

The school called Sussex Police and the substance was confirmed to be cocaine after testing.

The girl's father's house in Newhaven was later raided by police and 100 wraps of cocaine were found. The 31-year-old has now been arrested for dealing drugs.

The class A substance was placed in the bag once it had been opened and the incident should not be linked to the Haribo brand in any way.

Headteacher Christine Terrey said the safety of her pupils was her 'first priority' and a letter had been sent to all parents as soon as the substance was found.

She said that although it wasn't clear what the substance was staff 'didn't take any chances'.

The school is now working with Sussex Police to help them with their investigation.
