DAYTIME parking outside schools is set to be outlawed for 11 months of the year.

A range of vehicle restrictions are currently in place on roads near schools across Brighton and Hove.

But in a bid to improve safety and avoid confusion Brighton and Hove City Council plans to introduce a “blanket” parking ban in the majority of these areas.

Anyone defying the law will be subject to a fine of up to £70.

Sixty schools in the city currently have no stopping orders with the majority prohibiting parking from 8.30am to 9.30am and from 2pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

In a consultation, more than 90% of schools said they were in favour of extending the times at which parking was banned near their gates.

If approved, parking could be banned from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, with the restrictions lifted in August during school holidays.

Transport cabinet member Ian Davey said: “With before and after school activities such as breakfast and homework clubs children are now travelling to and from school throughout the day.

“It is important that we do everything we can to make those journeys as safe as possible.

“We feel that adopting this standard approach across the city is the best way to do that.”

The issue will be discussed at the transport cabinet member meeting on Tuesday If agreed, the new limits will be adopted immediately at 44 primary schools, four secondary schools and seven independent schools in the city.

However, changes to the rules outside Downs Junior, Hove Park Upper, Patcham High, Portslade Community College and Vardean School have been deferred after residents objected.

The move comes just weeks after the Green-run local authority reiterated its commitment to 20mph speed limits in some areas of the city.

Coun Davey previously said the reduced restrictions could be in force by next year.
