I BELIEVE this city has a whole host of talent.
Brighton and Hove is a young and dynamic city. This must be nurtured, not wasted.
However, under the Tory-led Government, youth unemployment has hit almost one million – that’s one in five young people.
In Brighton and Hove alone, just under 4,500 16–24 year-olds are unemployed.
The Government is failing our young people. Chancellor George Osborne has scrapped Labour’s successful Future Jobs Fund and abolished its guarantee of work or training for 18–24 year-olds on the dole for a period of six months.
Putting young people on the dole is a waste of talent, but also a waste of money.
Failing to get Britain back to work fast enough is helping push up the benefits bill by more than £12 billion.
We cannot allow the talents of young people go to waste.
I’m asking readers of The Argus to join Labour’s Britain’s Lost Talent campaign to call on the Government to use a £2 billion tax on bank bonuses to help create jobs and apprenticeships for young people.
Getting people off the dole and into work is the best way to get the deficit down – and stop Britain’s talent going to waste.
