IT WAS with utter incredulity that I read proposals to reduce the speed limits on most of the roads in Worthing to 20mph (The Argus, May 13).

From a private hire driver’s point of view, it makes trying to do one’s job nigh-on impossible. Already, we have problems in town when working late on a Friday or Saturday night. Roads are clear of traffic, yet time and time again we are stopped by police and given speeding tickets for minor infringements when, clearly, there are no safety issues apparent.

The average taxi driver basically feels like a revenue cash-cow for the Government. Some say speeding tickets are just part of the job – you’re lucky if you don’t get one.

The end result will be a lot more people banned because it is so easy to accrue 12 points, and no one can afford the taxi insurance anyway, let alone with points on it.

The bottom line is taxi drivers will be an endangered species. I hope everyone can get along without them.
