The UK & Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) started last Thursday July 14th and ends this Sunday 17th July in the Hilton Hotel on the seafront. At the end, players will share over £100,000. They play from 2pm to late into the night.
In a large windowless conference room, up to 35 gaming tables, with 9 players and a dealer on each, will battle it out playing Texas Hold’Em, 7 card stud poker and side games, Freezeout and Turbo events. A bit confusing but entertaining nevertheless. The Cork stage of UKIPT will be broadcast by Channel 4 on Tuesdays in August.
At regular intervals to signify that the blinds are up, a brief piece of 'trance music' with the lyrics 'everyday I'm shuffling,' comes out of the speakers. Some players dance on their chairs.
All watched over by Queen Victoria Coren. There are only a handful women players at the tables, though.
