A have-a-go hero wrestled a gunman to the ground after he threatened his wife.
Shopkeeper Tim Wheeler admitted “I lost my temper” and chased the masked gunman down the street after masked assailant pointed the weapon at his wife Nicky.
The gunman managed to flee – but returned and was rugby tackled to the ground by Mr Wheeler and another shopkeeper, Gavin O’Brien.
The two men held the armed robber down until police arrived and arrested him.
The gunman burst into Mr Wheeler’s jewellery shop, Wheelers Clockmakers and Jewellers in Bath Place, Worthing, at about 10.15am on Saturday.
The 46-year-old said: “The guy pointed a gun at me and then at my wife.
“It was fight or flight and I don’t know what came over me. I chose fight.
“At the end of the day I was protecting my wife and son.
Simon Stanton, 21, of Albourne Close, Brighton, has been charged with attempted robbery in connection with the incident.
He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court today.
