WITH regards to standing up at the Amex (Letters, October 15), I would like to comment on the letter from D Coutinho.

Why say, “Of course we taunt them”?

Firstly, it appears to be mostly obscene, both verbally and non-verbally.

Secondly, football fans in general seem to have evolved from previously issuing racist chants, so why can’t we evolve further?

Why do we, as football consumers, have to remain in the company of Neanderthal-like behaviour?

Why can’t we be more like rugby? Does their more civilised behaviour inhibit their enjoyment?

Clemanceau was quoted recently regarding his definition of himself as a patriot versus nationalism: “A nationalist loves his country and hates every other, a patriot just loves his country.”

We all know where nationalism leads.

It is tribal, outdated attitudes that detract from the enjoyment of a wonderful stadium capped with beautiful football.
