When Wellesley House in Waterloo Place, Brighton, was built in 1970, it had to be in two halves.
This was because 89-year-old Harriet Sylvester refused to move from her house, despite many offers to go. The block was only completed in 1974 after her death and was totally at odds with the surrounding buildings.
There were plans in the 1990s to demolish the offices because they were so ugly but these came to nothing.
Instead they were converted into the thriving Phoenix Gallery. Reader Chris Fruin, who sent this picture in, says: βIt is a good use of a modern building.β
