Zombies marching through the city for the fifth Beach of the Dead were slow to leave Victoria Gardens as they had to wait for the traffic.

But they took it in good humour and waved at shocked looking bus passengers as they sailed past.

People of all ages joined in and costumes were elaborate, imaginative and topical.

One man came dressed as Colonel Gaddafi, there were several Amy Winehouse tributes, a zombie chain gang and a zombie baby.

Event organiser Kate Amer, 23, said the first zombie walk in 2007 attracted just 40 people but she had 200 the following year, with more than 3,000 taking part this year.

She said: “In America and Canada they do these massive zombie walks that get 20,000 people doing it.

“I always wanted to do something a bit more special for Halloween and when I moved to Brighton I thought Brighton’s the place to do it.”
