A woman broke her ankle after falling through a supermarket’s skylight.

The woman and a man, who were both in their mid to late 20s, climbed on to the roof of Tesco Express in Sterling Parade, The Street, Rustington, near Littlehampton, just before midnight on Sunday.

But the woman fell through the skylight into the supermarket below and could not get out.

The man and woman were spoken to by police but neither was charged with any offence. She was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

In St Leonards, a 54-year-old Tesco Express worker was threatened with a screwdriver by two men demanding cigarettes.

The men had failed to break into the safe at the shop in Fernside Avenue at about 5.30am yesterday.

The shop worker was taken to the Conquest Hospital, St Leonards, with minor injuries to his back, eye and thumb after being pushed over.

Officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries and forensic examinations of the shop.

The men were white, both wearing gloves, track suits, hats with a hood over and a scarf across their faces. They escaped on a trials type motorcycle in Fernside Road and left in the direction of Harley Shute Road.

Detective Inspector Mark O’Brien said: “The motorcycle was stolen overnight from Farley Bank and found abandoned after the robbery in an alley by Wishing Tree Road.

“We are looking for a third suspect who did not enter the shop but was waiting on the motorcycle outside and acted as the driver.”
