A man wanted in connection with a fatal hit and run may have left the country.

Police are stumped as to the whereabouts of illegal immigrant Imran Shaukat who officers want to talk to in connection with the death.

Yesterday (October 31) one of the officers leading the investigation into 23-year-old Kalan Fletcher’s death admitted they were clueless as to the location of Imran Shaukat.

The 26-year-old, who was living in Worthing, has still not been traced nine days after Kalan was killed.

Major ports and other police forces have been alerted to look out for him, Sussex Police revealed.

Officers are not ruling out the possibility that Shaukat, who is understood to have overstayed a student visa, may have returned to his native Pakistan.

Kalan died on Saturday, October 22, at 4.40am on the A293 London Road, Hassocks.

He had enjoyed a night out in Brighton and got a taxi back before being dropped close to his home in Keymer Road, Keymer, near Hassocks.

Walking the rest of the way he was struck by a van and left to die at the roadside.

A van that police believe was involved in the tragedy was found abandoned in Worthing.

Officers appealed for Shaukat to come forward and released his picture last week.

Yesterday Sergeant Clare Kenward, from Sussex Road Policing Unit, admitted: “We do not know where he [Shaukat] is.”

Asked if he had fled to his native country, she said: “It’s not an impossibility.”
