A man accused of throwing fireworks into a crowd was one of 15 people arrested at the Lewes Bonfire celebrations.

A 24-year-old Worthing man allegedly hurled a firework into the 60,000 strong bonfire crowds on Saturday, November 5.

He is also accused of possessing cannabis and going equipped for theft. He is due to appear in court at a later date.

Three 21-year-old women from Haywards Heath were arrested after a man was hit over the head at Lewes railway station at 7.20pm.

Police are investigating whether a bottle was used in the attack. A man was injured but did not need hospital treatment.

Three women were arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm (ABH) and released on bail until November 28.

Parking meters were damaged by fireworks in Southover High Street and Friars Walk, Lewes.

A Sussex Police spokesman said the cost of repair would be “significant”.

Other people arrested included a 20-year-old man from Brighton who was held on suspicion of drug dealing. He has been bailed until February 9 next year.

Another 20-year-old man from Brighton was arrested on suspicion of ABH and bailed until December 5.

A 39-year-old man from Lewes, arrested for being drunk and disorderly, has been bailed until December 6.

People who received fixed penalty notices – £80 fines – included a 26-year-old Lewes man who admitted a public order offence, a 30-year-old homeless man who admitted being drunk and disorderly, a 21-year-old from Seaford who also admitted being drunk and disorderly and a 19-year-old from Polegate who confessed to being drunk and disorderly.

Two 21-year-old men, one from Eastbourne and one from Brighton, were for possession of class A drugs received a caution.

A 48-year-old man from Shoreham, arrested for being drunk and disorderly, also received a caution.

Michael Mehra, 45, of Harrisons Lane, Ringmer, has been charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place and bailed to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on December 1.
