Strike action will cause traffic chaos across Brighton and Hove, a council has warned.

Brighton and Hove City Council is warning of “severe delays” throughout the city on Wednesday, November 30 as thousands of demonstrators gather at rallying points from 10am.

Strikers will pitch up at East Brighton Park, Hove Town Hall and Brighton University at 10am.

From 10.30am they will march to Victoria Gardens. From midday they will move off up North Street, along Queens Road and down North Road, before a huge rally at The Level from 1pm.

It's not all bad news for Brighton and Hove motorists.

But drivers in the city could benefit from a surprise perk if next week's pensions strike goes ahead.

Motorists whose parking permits run out on or before Wednesday - the date of the planned action - will be given a week's parking amnesty.

Thousands of people across Sussex are expected to join in the walkout on November 30 - due to be the largest industrial action in British memory.

Closures

The strike will close crematoriums, schools, libraries and museums and rubbish collections will be “severely affected”.

But Brighton and Hove City Council said that if people cannot renew their permits they will be given until December 7 before they become eligible for a ticket.

However, the local authority said parking wardens will be patrolling the city as normal.

A council spokeswoman said yesterday: “Parking wardens are not affected.

"They not on local government pension so they will be out as normal.”

As of yesterday afternoon (November 25) 119 schools in Sussex and Brighton and Hove had confirmed they would be closed or partially closed.

In addition BHCC confirmed no bookings had been taken for burials or crematoriums on Wednesday.

The day has also been blocked out for weddings and civil ceremonies and there will be a “limited” registration service for births and deaths.

Passengers are being told to prepare for “significant disruption” at Gatwick Airport.
