A man has been jailed for 11 years for stabbing his stepfather.

Nathan Vaughan-Jones was today jailed for killing Nigel Randall Ross in Mill Lane, South Chailey, shortly after 4pm on March 29 last year.

The 34-year-old, who gave his home address as Bermuda, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 63-year-old Nigel Ross on the grounds of diminished responsibility at a previous court hearing at Lewes Crown Court on January 26 this year.

Vaughan-Jones was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court.

Helen Ellwood, senior crown prosecutor from Brighton Crown Prosecution Service, said: "This case involved a very detailed consideration of the defendant's mental state at the time that he killed Mr Ross.

"Mr Vaughan-Jones was examined by two separate Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists. Both psychiatrists concluded that, at the time of the killing, Mr Vaughan-Jones was suffering from diminished responsibility.

"We had to be satisfied that the legal criteria for this defence was made out, and, after fully exploring and testing the medical evidence in this case, we were satisfied that it was. It was on this basis that the plea to manslaughter was accepted by the crown."

Detective Chief Inspector Jeremy Graves said: "Nathan Vaughan-Jones armed himself with a knife during the course of an argument with the victim, which ended with tragic results."
