Albion footballer Kazenga Lualua is to stand trial over a late-night brawl outside a nightclub.

The 21-year-old winger is accused of being involved in the fight in June last year.

During the clash an 18-year-old was punched and kicked to the ground and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

LuaLua is on bail to appear again in court in November.

The incident happened while the footballer was on a night out in Newcastle with Newcastle United reserve team player Andy Mogwo |and a third man, Kevin Ashong.

The defendants are each accused of affray on Sunday June 26 after an incident outside the Riverside nightclub in Newcastle’s Quayside.

Northumbria police were called to the scene at about 3am after an 18-year-old man was assaulted.

It is believed he was injured during a fight between two groups of men.

The victim was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment.

Mogwo, of Redland Avenue in Newcastle, was arrested at the time of the incident and charged with affray.

LuaLua, of Sunleigh Court, Hurstpierpoint, and Ashong, 20, of Portsmouth Road, Surbiton, were later sent a police summons to appear in court.

All pleaded not guilty to a charge of affray when they appeared at Newcastle Crown Court.

LuaLua first signed for Albion during the 2009/10 season.

He became a fans’ favourite during his second spell last season with his explosive goals and even more explosive celebrations after signing on loan from Newcastle.

His four goals in seven starts helped the club towards promotion to the Championship.

He eventually moved to Albion permanently in November and has played 29 times this season, scoring twice.

Lualua was released on bail to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on November 19.
