A musical tribute to Hanover is set to open at the Brighton Fringe festival this month.

Hanover the Musical! is writer and director Mark Brailsford’s “love letter” to Hanover, in which the area declares independence and saves the world.

Inspired by Passport to Pimlico, the 1949 comedy film, the musical has songs and gags about Muesli Mountain - as Hanover is affectionately known - and Brighton’s Green council.

“I was looking at all the great songs we have done about Hanover in Treason [The Treason Show, Brighton's resident comedy sketch show] and I thought I'd write some more,” Mark said.

Combined with another sketch about Brighton becoming independent, Mark began working on the show late last year.

Five other Brightonians make up the cast – including three from Hanover – but Mark is quick to downplay the localism.

“You don’t really need to know Pimlico to get Passport to Pimlico,” the creator said on the accessibility of the show, assuring no specific knowledge of Hanover is needed to come along and find the show a good laugh.

Mark loves to see his work on stage, and is looking forward to entertaining his audience as the musical enjoys a good run during the festival.

His favourite thing about Hanover, however? The pubs, of course.

Hanover the Musical! runs from May 5 to 27, Saturdays and Sundays, at the Hanover Community Centre on Southover Street.

Tickets are available here and by emailing tickets@treasonshow.co.uk

The Treason Show is on at Latest Music Bar from May 23 to 25.
