Phone lines down across Sussex

Phone lines are down in locations across Sussex.

Residents have reported no service in areas of Brighton as well as Polegate and Eastbourne.

Calls to numbers in affected areas all result in the engaged tone. One customer has contacted the Argus to say he is frantically trying and failing to get through to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

A BT spokeswoman said: “We're really sorry but we've got a problem at the moment in sme areas, which means that some of our customers will be having trouble with their telephone line. We're trying to fix the problem as quickly as we can.”

This is how it begins!

I'm sure I can just about make out a Chinese attack fleet on the horizon. We'll all be making iPads in a month or two.

Good luck!

I'm in Brighton. My email update from BT - having reported the fault - is that they hope to repair it by May 14th!

The web page told me to phone the help line to let them know that the phone did not work. Classic. But it did raise the question of how the phone could not work yet the same phone line which supplies the internet did!

The telephone and the internet only share the wires from your premises to the exchange, they then use separate equipment. Therefore if it's a fault within the exchange you may still get one without the other.
