SO, Asda won the day over the Arrowcroft development for Newhaven’s port area following a planning meeting last Wednesday.

The development is on a greenfield site. OK, I’ll accept the supermarket – it’s great for jobs for the unemployed and I’m all for that.

But we do not have the appropriate infrastructure to support the proposed housing development.

A GP’s surgery and our schools (one currently in special measures with another not long out of it) will be stretched to bursting point.

Residents in this “Eastside” area will wonder what’s hit them: traffic, new roads, total upheaval and a change of lifestyle. Things will never be the same.

With regard to the other proposal, Arrowcroft were suggesting regen-eration of an area which should have never been allowed to fall into decline. It was not Arrowcroft’s responsibility to rejuvenate something that is already in the ownership of Newhaven Port and Properties (NPP).

There are listed buildings involved – why hasn’t NPP approached English Heritage for help in financing their restoration? Why has NPP not maintained the quayside?

I KNOW on the face of it, Newhaven’s not the most amazing looking place, but there is the stunning estuary of the River Ouse, a great fishing port and ferry port.

Looking away from the sea, there’s a great view of the Downs, a sandy beach and a section of expansive cliffs.

With all this potential, and the obvious need to revamp the crumbling promenade along the east side of the river, the amazing vision put forward and now accepted is to build a great big Asda.

Well done you super visionaries, put in power to make the “right” decisions.

The majority of people in New-haven don’t want it, but say they aren’t being listened to.
