Early last century, one of the most popular cards to be chosen in Brighton did not display people on the beach sunbathing.
It would be called Rough Sea at Brighton and was usually pictured on the Albion beach, as this one is.
The East Street and Palace Pier groynes push any swells or waves high as they come towards the beach, making a spectacular scene in a gale.
This beach has long been close to the arch of Brighton Swimming Club whose members will brave most but not all seas. In the background can be seen several hotels, including the Queen’s. On the far left is the distinctive small spire that used to be on the roof of the Metropole.
