Following a super London 2012 Olympics , Mitt Romney, the US equivalent of a Tory hopeful, ought now to eat his words about London’s capabilities.

If one counts medals per 10,000 of the population – the UK with some 60,000 to the 300,000 of the US – then our medal tally is frankly champion.

China, with more than one billion inhabitants, has a complex social/economic demographic so it is unfair to compare.

Let’s hope Mr Obama gets re-elected.
