Tony Mernagh is quite right to point out how convoluted the new system for complaints about “chuggers” is (The Argus, August 28).
Now, just nine days after the complaints system began on August 20, it’s made even more confusing by the announcement that the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association wants to pass its role in dealing with complaints to another body: the Fundraising Standards Board.
This hardly gives confidence and clarity to the public and businesses troubled by “chuggers” (street fundraisers).
Like Tony Mernagh, I would like to see a complete ban on “chugging”. In the absence of this, the authorities should be seeking agreement with the PFRA to severely limit the numbers and operating days and times of “chuggers” in those parts of the city where they are still a problem. Many councils now have rules in place.
