A council has awarded a contract to clean up waste at unauthorised traveller sites.

Tim Jordan Grounds Maintenance will provide collection, disposal, recycling and reuse of waste at unauthorised travellers sites in Brighton and Hove. The contract will run for three years with the option of an extension of up to one year subject to performance.

According to documents posted on the South East Business Portal website the total value of the contract is in the range of £350,000 to £500,000. Earlier this year Brighton and Hove City Council ’s environment, transport and sustain ability cabinet decided to bring some services in-house and put the rest out to tender in order to cut costs.

Cityclean, the council’s refuse and recycling service, has added the Horsdean traveller transit site to its rounds.

Councillor Pete West , Brighton and Hove City Council’s cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said the new service model aims to save money by using the council’s refuse and recycling service for the Horsdean transit site, which will save up to £24,000 a year.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said the contract was awarded to the firm, based in New Road, Newhaven, after a rigorous tender process attracting several bidders.

He said: “The contract has been awarded to Tim Jordan Grounds Maintenance – the previous holder of the contract. The contract started on September 1 and has a three-year term.

“In providing these services the council is following national government guidelines which aim to ensure such sites are kept as tidy as possible.

“The policy is not new nationally, or in Brighton and Hove, and has not been introduced by the current council administration. It has been standard practice under all recent council administrations.”
