Brighton restaurant bans diners for eating too much

First published in News by , Senior Reporter

Two hungry diners have been banned for life from an all-you-can-eat restaurant – for scoffing too much food.

George Dalmon and Andy Miles were told never to come back to Gobi in Middle Street, Brighton, after wolfing down five stir-fry bowls each during a marathon munching session.

The restaurant’s manager angrily accused the pair of “eating him out of business” and claimed they had “destroyed” the buffet station in a frantic rush to gobble everything on the menu.

But ex-rugby player Mr Dalmon, 26, said Gobi should stick to its promise and allow people to eat as much as they want.

He said: “They’ve only got small bowls and you can’t get enough in there so we always go back for more. It’s an all-you-can-eat place so we love it.

“We’ve been eating there for a couple of years but suddenly the owner came to our table in front of all the customers and went absolutely mental. He told us we were eating him out of business and said we were a couple of pigs. I asked him if he was joking but he told us we were banned for life. I couldn’t believe it.”

On its website, the restaurant promises customers they can create their “own individual meal – and eat all you like”.

But Gobi’s manager, who did not wish to be named, admitted he had told the “greedy” pair never to come back and said Tuesday night had been “the final straw”.

He said: “Basically they just come in and pig out. We have put up with them for two years but I’ve had enough.

“They spoil everything and they are in such a hurry to beat everyone to the food. We are supposed to be a buffet but they eat everything out of the bowls before people can get there.

“We just can’t keep doing this.”

The manager complained the pair would only ever drink water rather than ordering drinks and claimed they would never pay the optional service charge.

He said: “We are not a charity. We are a business. It’s our restaurant and we can tell people not to come back if we don’t want them to.”

This pair sound like a right couple of selfish gluttons.
These offers, whilst generally good value, are not there to be taken advantage of too the degree this pair seem to have done. Their behaviour spoils it for the rest. No drinks ordered or optional service charge given, for over 2 years......and they feel hard done by!! They sicken me!!

The restaurant is wrong; it chooses to offer an all you can eat menu. If they wish to limit the amount of visits a diner makes to the buffet they should should state this clearly in the terms and conditions of the offer. This is one restaurant I will not visit.

While these two guys have been accused of being greedy, this is not the issue. If it's an "all you can eat" restaurant, the owner must accept the potential for people to eat more than he may expect. It is not even about what is reasonable, the term "all you can eat" is by it's very nature open to what each individual is able to, or indeed wishes to eat. It is unacceptable that because these two patrons eat more than the owner wants them to eat, they are barred. If the owner wants to stop these two individuals, he must remove the "all you can eat" policy from the resaurant.

They paid their money so fair enough. If they wanted salad they wouldn't be going to an all-you-can-eat place. As for service charge, that is entirely optional and they can refuse it if they like. And in this case they are right to refuse it. I wouldn't worry about a ban for life though as i doubt this place will be around for much longer anyway.

The restaurant have totally honoured their agreement - customers get all they can eat.

They owner has simply and reasonably said he will not take these two on as customers again.

It is a shame such offers get abused - we all end up with petty rules/regs about 'only so many bowls'' etc and the innocent start feeling guilty instead of relaxed.

I agree with some of the comments above, if its "all you can eat" then as far as I am concerned it is what it is.

The manager complained that these two having been doing this for a while? surely that means then that they have been regular customers and have probably therefore paid some of the owners bills?? In this day and age this is the kind of story that puts potential customers off going to these establishments and this could be a bad move by the manager, perhaps sometimes a quiet word in one's ear is better then having a go at someone and therefore leading to a story like this being created.

How can you abuse an "all you can eat" policy. If you eat everything you select, you are in no way abusing the policy.

But yeah, it's the fault of the restaurant. You can't offer 'All You Can Eat' and then ban people with healthy appetites. That's having your cake and eating it, or rather, not letting other people eat it.

What a disgusting manager and an appalling lack of manners - to speak to any customer in this way shows he should not be the manager of any place that has customers. He doesn't know how to run a restaurant obviously.

And charging a "service charge" in a buffet restaurant is another way of getting the public to pay your waiters bills for you - obviously a very bad owner here too.

I will never visit this restaurant. Thank you to these two for letting the rest of us know just how vile this man really is.

It's amazing how some people can come on here and criticise the 2 gentleman, what is also worse is that a lot of comments are making reference to their weight - It's always easy to make those kind of comments in front of your PC or through your phone but there is no need for personal insults like the above.

Also, why are people complaining that they went to the Argus? this newspaper/website has been set up to report local news and this news is relevant to Brighton and Hove.

I stand by the fact that the Mangaer was bang out of line with this and I hope it does create a loss of trade for him - perhaps then he will learn to appreciate customers who are willing to spend money in his establishment.

The two guys deserve praise for going to the Argus with this story as I will now never go to this place as do not feel my money would be appreciated (I would also be worried that I would be eating too much as the bowls are half the size of a normal cereal bowl)

As for the guys only drinking water, whats wrong with that and I also agree with the comments about how the "manager" can justify charging a service charge when there isnt really a table service.....

It is about not wanting my salad squashed into a small bowl ,
especially if you want a couple of rolls with it.

I do not see what is wrong with not giving a tip.
After all you do not tip a shop assistant /bus driver /ect .yet you still get a good service from them.

It is up to the manager to pay his staff a decent wage not the customers.

Although if that is the way the manager speaks to the customers I wonder if he treats his staff any better.

For someone to be thrown out of a restaurant where they were a regular shows that they were not easy customers - no tipping and only ordering free water reflects that. The person cooking the stir fry in front of you is the one who would benefit from the tips and, after cooking so many bowls for these two demanding diners, definitely deserves something.

I'll check out Gobi now as it sounds really good. I bet if you treat the manager and staff with courtesy, you get the same in return.

What is not acceptable is those customers who fill their plate up and then leave food because they are full.

Slightly aside from the topic but a few contributors have mentioned tipping and service charges.
As someone who lives in two countries I find the UK attitude to tipping odd to say the least, and service charges as well.
If someone gives you a bill you pay the bill and that's it. There should be no tipping and no service charges.
You don't tip a bus driver, then why tip a taxi driver?
It's the customer who should be rewarded for giving their custom not the waiter/barman or taxi driver for simply doing their job.
OK fine if the bill is 19,90 I wouldn't expect the change but no service is worth ten percent or more.

George, an adult male requires 2,500 calories a day. That's a day.
One small bowl of this type of food is probably your whole days calorie intake.
Also having lived in south east Asia, the bowls are tiny, tiny because what goes in them is high in calories and energy and they only eat more if they use more calories.
However, the cultural difference about food in the western world is that we eat even when we don't need the calories because we are a nation of gluttons.
George, you are young, your life is ahead of you, keep the small bowl and learn to eat properly.
Do you need more bowls of food or just want it?

there are many people who go to this type of establishment, and only eat one plate/bowlful, so if you have a couple like this who eat more, they are only eating what others don't. however,, these two are being extremely greedy, as they won't actually want this food. drinks have a massive mark up, so this is why the owner is really moaning, not the fact they are eating too much. service charges are optional, and with it being 'self-service', do you pay yourself?

When 2 people rob the all you can eat bar to the point others have to wait to get food, losing 2 ungrateful customers is not worth losing all the one's that have to wait because they are takeing all the food at once.Taking to much is only a part of what these 2 are abusing, give the manager a break, he would not be in business if he were unhospitable.

what a funny article! Two things occur to me:

1) an "optional service charge" , particularly one where the manager gets cross if you never pay it, is a sign of a restaurant which wants to rip off its customers. A fair honest establishment just lets its customers tip the waiter if they wish - and for whatever reason. It certainly does not put the customer under any kind of pressure.

2) Good, fair restaurants such as many Indian restaurants in Brighton and Hove and for example Food for Friends in the lanes have been going for DECADES. Those who really have to count every penny either have the wrong food concept, or are just plain unfriendly - as indeed this one seems to be.

I like to try out the many eateries in Brighton but I shall be avoiding this one. Rudeness to cutomers - whatever they have done - is completely wrong, and will lead to you going bust at some time.

1) Regarding the rudeness:

"Need to learn appropriate manner when dealing with customers. Manager is rude, rude, rude."

and

2) regarding "all you can eat" ....

"After two or three trips to the food counter, over to the frying plate area, and then back, you start to lag a bit. The bowls hold about as much food as a big teacup, and even though we were there early evening, with only about 10 other diners in the place, the queues got longer and longer. We had about three little bowlfuls and gave up.

Not as much all you can eat as all you can queue! "

There's no excuse for rudeness, but why should the restaurant manager put their prices up for the rest of us just to cover the small minority who abuse the deal being offered?

Clearly, these two aren't being barred because they eat too much. This stuff costs pence so the owners wouldn't care if they ate 10 bowls.

It's obviously their attitude and behavior at the buffet. Pushing others out the way. One only has to look at them in that stupid photo to realise what a pair of buffoons we are dealing with here.

And the half hearted attempt to defend themselves with their comments here is laughable also. Talk about terrible English language skills showing you up to be a moron.

Glad that this is being picked up nationally and the two rude, delusional morons are being laughed at rather than supported.

I for one will be eating in Gobi next time I'm in Brighton to show my approval.

And I will make sure to eat five bowls in their honour!

No wonder there are so many obese people, all wanting to stuff as much food in their gobs as possible! Like pigs to the trough! Fortunately there are no such crass establishments in Hove... Nor are there any McDonalds or KFC's. Only tasteful brasseries, patisseries and charcuteries! By the way I'm being purposefully facetious before any witless bozos bust a blood vessel at me. However I DO think buffets are tacky, and the food is always crap, unless it's the breakfast buffet at the Ritz of course. They put saffron on their scrambled eggs and serve them with truffles.

Can't believe this has made second most read article on the BBC!

Feel so sorry for the manager (although they'll probably experience a surge in business). The issue is their behaviour not the amount they eat. I usually have about seven bowls there - they are tiny little breakfast bowls.

These two allegedly mess up the whole buffet area and push in the queues.

Of course they're within their rights to not order drinks, as is the manager to refuse them service. If they like it there enough to keep returning over a two year period why wouldn't they want to support the place by tipping etc. - they would've befriended the manager and probably become his favourite customers.

I have seen similar behaviour in other places where some customers are rather greedy and you can see they aren’t enjoying their meal since they are more interested in getting what they can and stuffing themselves.

It is not the amount they eat but the manner they behave which matters to most customers, and these two push other customers out of the way - which George Dalmon is probably used to when playing a game of rugby, but there is no need to behave in a macho manner when having a meal. This would be my key factor for banning them.

This is the first time I have heard of any action like this against such customers and I admire the management for standing firm with these two ‘filthy pigs’.

After all, it is the management’s discretion as to whether someone can be served, and not a right to demand being served.

Find it quite funny that people are just presuming that these to, so-called 'fat pigs' were eating everything in site.

May be the manager should consider charging by the bowl - because it is pretty obvious that this is not an all you can eat buffet.

Why the hell should people have to pay service charge when they are getting up and putting together their own meal. I always feel pressurised to give a good tip even when I feel that the service was rubbish.

This manager is very lucky that the two lads only went to the Argus, because if it was me that had been verbally assaulted by him I have would have put the buffet over his head!

I could understand the managers reaction if they were wasting food. But if your going to say your an all you can eat buffet then you need to honour that.

In an attempt to sum up, many of you have decided the guys are fat pigs and gluttons - just by seeing a pic on here or seeing the bloke eating scrambled eggs on tv - without even knowing them, shame on you for your derogatory attitude.
Funnily enough the restaurants catch line is "a restaurant experience like no other" and the menu clearly states "eat all you like". Too right!, they charge a fortune for drinks and the food. eg if you had just one glass of wine it would bump up the bill to nearly £16 so obviously the service charge is hidden in that price.
It may well be good quality but an 'a la carte' menu would be about the same price so the gaff is clearly a rip-off.
As an afterthought, of course any publicity is good publicity and I believe that is what this story is - viral marketing.

I also love how morbidly obese people now call themselves "ex rugby players"....that is not an excuse to be fat.

Hello there. USA finally checking in on this topic. Don't get your knickers is a bunch but a lot of you chiming in on this seem to have missed a point that's plain as night and day. Manager of an all-you-can-eat restaurant tells two patrons they they can't have all they can eat, ergo, ipso facto, the manager is at fault and that's the end of the story.
The manager plainly demonstrates his poor judgement and awful manners in calling out these guys, loudly and in front of other customers, to announce that he's not pleased at their taking his offer at face value and are no longer welcome so what's the point of defending him? Right, there is none. That means those who are defending the restaurant or manager are falt-out idiots or they have some kind of hidden agenda.
Perhaps if it was two, bony old women who got turned away you'd be all up in arms but since it's, for you, conveniently two big guys you see a chance to chastise them for how much they weigh. I'd bet half of you crazy sods are just as big or bigger.

I'll bet there aren't many people looking forward to an experience like those two guys had so the restaurant is living on borrowed time.

By the way, the story's made it's way to the Huffington Post which means it's out of your **** hands now. Let the US be the final judge as usual, ok?

Peter Westgate accuses the pair of 'eating him out of business' yet lives in a high-value property opposite Cardinal Newman school (public information) and can afford to leave his restaurant to go on holiday? Sounds like he is the one who is greedy.

However, I don't think either of the chaps in the article are in danger of dying of starvation.

I'd call it a no-score draw and leave it at that - everyone in this article is a loser.

This sort of thing is becoming the norm these days. Consider Internet Providers who advertise 'unlimited' downloads and throttle you if you dare to take them at their word claiming it is 'unfair' to their other customers. The next time I go to an 'all you can eat' establishment should I ask for clarification ? Should it be necessary to ask this question or should I read the small print that explains (like ISPs) that 'unlimited' means nothing of the sort ?

You can just tell by looking at them they sit at home all day playing on their consoles eating junk food, not cleaning up after themselves, and only going out and 'socialising' when there's an 'all you can eat' offer on.

You disgusting fat lard-ridden gluttonites.
Well, you sound like a fine-looking kind of guy. Why don't you send in a photo of your svelte self so we can all agree what healthy-looking specimen you are? At least no-one will then lower themselves to your current level and hurl insults at you.
