Artists who run Brighton’s oldest independent gallery have celebrated a relaunch following a renovation and new long-term lease.

Katty McMurray and Kathryn Matthews toasted the success of Two Kats and a Cow, on King’s Road Arches, on Saturday.

The pair have been at the space for 14 years and have enjoyed a strong surge in trade in recent months as consumers begin to splash out on art and luxury goods again.

Katty said: “Over the past few years small businesses have been really struggling but we feel we’re really through that now and we’re really positively embracing the recovery.

“People are coming back to the beach. The area has been pretty neglected in recent years but it’s looking really positive with the new developments.

“It’s quite exciting with the renovations at the west end of the beach and all the new arch space.

“Things picked up for us towards the end of last year. During the recession we had regular customers but not so much passing trade.

“But a lot of people have started thinking about home improvements now.

“I think the i360 will bring revenue to town. It’s a lot of money but if it doesn’t happen it could be another ten years as a no-go area.

We’re in favour of any regeneration.”

Quirky ceramics, award-winning jewellery and exclusive limited-edition prints were exhibited alongside giant budgies and chandeliers.

Guests enjoyed canapes from Egg & Spoon, drinks from Ten Green Bottles and music from DJ Schwing.
