Working for nothing does not sound like the best way to help your bottom line.

But a new organisation aims to promote the benefits of offering services free.

ProHelp, which is run through the Brighton and Hove Business Community Partnership, aims to make it easier for firms to link up with charities.

The scheme has already benefited dozens of third sector organisations, including Emmaus in Portslade, which provides a community for the homeless to live and work in.

Simon Bottrell, of 7 Creative, an ethical communication agency, wanted to build a new indoor space for the project.

He gathered a host of individuals and organisations to help out, including the Brighton and Hove Wood Recycling Project, Claire Potter, of Claire Potter Design, designer and TV presenter Oliver Heath and Richard Wolfstrome, of Wolfstrome Design.

Mr Bottrell said the assistance of ProHelp was invaluable.

He said: “In the past, myself and other members of the group have found free work can be like a thread that, once pulled, is almost impossible to find the end of.

“This time, from the outset the aims and objectives of the project were clear and all parties understood what would be expected of them.

“This meant that Emmaus knew exactly what our level of commitment was and we were able to ensure that the time we would spend on the project was capped. This has developed as the project has progressed and, stage by stage, all the parties have worked together to ensure everyone is comfortable with their involvement.”

ProHelp also benefited Janine Enefer, manager of the Moulsecoomb Neighbourhood Trust, which arranges child care and play in east Brighton, by putting her in touch with training consultant Philip Jones, of Workplace Dynamics.

He offered his expertise and time free for more than 18 months.

Ms Enefer said: “We do not have any HR managers, legal departments or access to anything like that because the money is not there. So this help is enormously beneficial.”
