A speeder has been jailed after taking police on a 118mph car chase along a motorway.

Officers chasing Colin Pollard, 29, of Sackville Gardens, East Grinstead, clocked 118miles per hour trying to keep pace with him on the M23 southbound.

Pollard sped away from police in his Renault Laguna as they tried to stop him in Crawley on December 7.

He was chased through Turners Hill Road, the M23, Balcombe Road, Northgate Avenue and Crawley Avenue, going the wrong way around roundabouts before traffic officers had to crash into him to force him to stop.

Sussex Police said their officers clocked 118mph trying to keep pace with him on the M23.

Richard Cherrill, prosecuting at Brighton Crown Court on Friday, said: “The defendant set off at speed reaching 80mph in a 40mph zone. He approached a roundabout and twice went round it the wrong way.

“He drove off in the teeth of incoming traffic and was still pursued by the police car.

“Then went to Turners Hill Road, a 30mph zone, and the speed clocked by the officers was in excess of 90mph.

“He drove on wrong side of the road on several occasions for no apparent reason.

“Then went back onto Turners Hill Road heading back towards Crawley.

“The police car had to drive at about 60 to 70mph in a 30mph zone to try and keep up with him.

“He was then seen to cross over white lines and to set off again at speed; in a 50mph zone the police car clocked 90mph.

“Then he went onto another roundabout and once again went around it the wrong way and did that again on two occasions.

“He ended up on the M23 southbound."

Pollard eventually arrested after police crashed their car into his in order to force him to stop as he approached a roundabout.

Defending, Richard Prior said his client, who had two previous convictions for dangerous driving, had been diagnosed with paranoid and antisocial personality disorder and had poor emotional control.

Pollard had pleaded guilty in January to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and failing to stop for police.

He was also banned from the road for two years.
