A LEADING businessman is calling for action after a two-year-old girl was run over by a lorry at a "dangerous" turning.

Eloise Lee suffered a fractured leg and ankle after being hit by a blue lorry that was turning into Middle Street from King's Road in Brighton last Friday just after 1.10pm.

It is not known if the driver realised he hit the toddler and officers are appealing for him to come forward.

Andy Cheesman, who owns Buddies cafe and bar in King's Road, captured the crash on his CCTV.

He said: "The little girl appears to come from nowhere and it looks like she was hit by the side of the front wheel.

"That corner is dangerous and we've dealt with five accidents in the last 18 months, something should be done.

"Ever since the council stopped traffic going down Ship Street, all the delivery lorries going to businesses in The Lanes have to go down Middle Street and it gets very busy.

"The other thing is that they have made the road almost like a continuation of the pavement, there is no curb whatsoever and many tourists don't realise and don't stop and look."

The youngster, from Eastbourne, had been in Brighton for the day with her mother Jodie, 23.

In the CCTV they can be seen walking together as the lorry slows for the turning and indicates.

Then as the lorry makes the left turn, the youngster runs towards the crossing and it clips her as it turns.

It is not clear if the driver realised he hit the girl and he continued up Middle Street without stopping.

She was taken to Brighton's Royal Sussex County Hospital.

It was initially reported the driver had been in a purple or maroon coloured lorry. However, the CCTV shows a blue lorry with a white cab with the word "extra" on the door of the vehicle.

The Argus asked Brighton and Hove City Council for a statement on the changes to the road but a spokeswoman declined to comment "as the incident is currently under police investigation".
