FIVE people were taken to hospital after a two car accident which closed a busy A-road.

A 21-year-old man driving a blue Vauxhall Astra southbound on the A24 lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, causing debris to collide with a blue Citroen C4 travelling in the opposite direction.

He was taken to Worthing Hospital with serious injuries along with his two passengers: a 19-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, both from Horsham, with minor injuries.

The driver of the C4, a 48-year-old woman from Sevenoaks, was taken to the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill with serious injuries. Her 21-year-old female passenger was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

The incident happened at about 8pm on Friday (October 21) near Southwater.

Police closed both the northbound and the southbound carriageways for several hours while the vehicles were recovered and the scene made safe.
