Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a 59-year-old pedestrian who died after a being knocked down by a car on the A27.

Trevor Campbell, 59, from Sompting, was walking to work at Lancing College when he was hit by a BMW yesterday morning.

As reported by The Argus, emergency services were called at 6.05am on Thursday to an accident involving a car and a pedestrian on the A27 Old Shoreham Road, Lancing.

Paramedics tried to save Mr Campbell’s life but he passed away at the scene.

The driver of the BMW, a 58-year-old man from Climping, suffered minor injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

This morning a Sussex Police spokesman said the motorist had been released without charge.

This afternoon his family has paid tribute to him.

His wife Rosemary said: "We're all devastated by what's happened.

"Trevor was such a wonderful man and he will be sorely missed by all his family and friends."

The couple were married for 32 years and had a daughter Ella, 28. Two years ago she gave birth to Mr Campbell’s first grandchild Aerith.

"Trevor absolutely doted on Aerith, just as he did our own daughter,” said Mrs Campbell. “His death is going to leave a huge gap in our family."

Having previously worked for British Aerospace at Kingston-on-Thames and later worked in Dunsfold, Surrey, Mr Campbell moved his family to West Sussex in 1989.

He served for 20 years as a traffic warden and later worked in the police evidence store in Durrington.

His family said he was proud to have received several chief constable's commendations.

He was most recently employed as a porter at Lancing College and was taking his usual walk to work when Thursday's tragic collision occurred.

Lancing College headmaster Dominic Oliver said: “Trevor was a long serving and loyal member of the Domestic Services Team at Lancing College.

"He was well known by many people and the whole community at Lancing is deeply saddened and shocked by his death.

“Our thoughts and prayers are very much with his family at this time.”
