MORE than 120 girls from prep schools in Sussex competed in track and field events at Hurstpierpoint College for the Girls’ Prep School Athletics Competition.

Sports events included high jump, long jump, discus, javelin and running and new events added this year were triple jump for the under-13s and a 600m race for the under-nines.

Overall winners in the Senior competition were Westbourne House School, with Hurst finishing 12 points adrift in second place.

The winners of the Junior competition were Hurst.

Carol Adams, head of girls’ sports at Hurst Prep School, said: “The standard was extremely high and Hurst achieved great results, with many of the girls gaining Personal Bests in their chosen events.

“Tinka Carleton-Smith from Hurst was outstanding – winning first place for her age group in the 800m, long jump and high jump.

“Annabel Steedman, never having thrown discus before, won her event with a throw of over 15m.

“In the 200m race, Sophia Langdon stormed home for Hurst in the under-10s race with a time of 33.98, and Evie Coker took first place with a time of 30.86 in the under-12s race.

“In the under-10s relay there were fantastic baton changes and Hurst finished 15m ahead of the rest of the field.

“In the under-nines relay, Hurst girls Nicole Holdsworth, Harriet Miller, Tilly Paisley and Katie Mansbridge, brought home the baton in second place.”

Girls attended the event from Ardingly College, Brighton and Hove High School, Burgess Hill School for Girls, Farlington School, Hurst, Westbourne House School, Windlesham School and Christ’s Hospital School.
