Two young blacksmiths showed their metal when their pieces were selected for an exhibition.

Jake Souch and Joel Robertson-Robinson, two of the qualifying level three blacksmithing students from Plumpton College, have had their final pieces selected for The International Blacksmithing exhibition in Exeter.

The gate created by Jake (pictured) also won the Blacksmiths shield at The South of England show, 2014. It was designed and constructed by Jake as his final project and has received much acclaim from many professional blacksmiths, both for its design and its construction.

Meanwhile Joel’s award-winning shelves have also been granted a first prize in metal from the young craftsman exhibition at this year’s South of England show.

Jake and Joel are now both working with local blacksmiths and are very proud to have their creations selected for The International Blacksmiths Festival at Westpoint, Exeter, from August 13 to 16.

A college spokeswoman said: “The college is offering new degree courses which include foundation degrees in creative metalworking, equine dentistry, animal behaviour and welfare and a masters degree in viticulture and oenology, itself unique to the UK.

“The metalsmithing department offers a range of qualifications and courses in blacksmithing, jewellery, silversmithing and coppersmithing.

“Graduating students have obtained jobs in the industry, both within the UK and abroad. “The future of blacksmithing is looking a lot brighter and it looks like the student smiths trained at Plumpton College and other colleges throughout the UK are keeping this traditional craft very much alive. “Plumpton College students have year-on-year secured jobs in the blacksmithing industry and have also progressed to create their own businesses nationally. “The international blacksmithing festival at Exeter will be a great showcase for these students of a very traditional craft that is evolving with the times.”
