BRIGHTON and Hove Cricket Club’s Under-14s lifted the South Area Young Cricketers League Under-14 Cup after a five-wicket win against Preston Nomads.

Moses Brazil and Nick Collyer shone with the ball while Leo Towers and Alec Scott batted superbly to see their side home at Sussex University.

After winning the toss, skipper Scott elected to bowl first and got off the perfect start when Nomads opener Josh Jacobs was back in the pavilion for a duck thanks to a Collyer run out.

Brazil ripped through the middle order in a devastating spell of 3-13 off his three overs.

First to go was Max Lincoln who was caught by Mathew Cordery before Nomads captain Joe De Vivo was bowled and the Brazil-Cordery combination struck again to dismiss Flynn Middleton-Payne.

Ben Tunley and Christian Weatherstone set about rescuing the innings for Nomads and the pair battled to give their team a footing in the game.

Both batted with grit before Tunley was run out for 20 and Weatherstone was bowled by Collyer.

Luc Smith hit three fours in a solid 14 before he was dismissed by Rowan Hemblade and Collyer mopped up the lower order.

Ten and 11, Bertie Packham and Will Read, finished not out and Nomads sneaked up to 90-9 in their 20 overs.

Leo Towers set the foundation for the Brighton and Hove chase with 25 off 25 balls.

He lost three partners in Cordery, Brazil and Stephen Marsh as Christy Heath and Adam O’Brien claimed wickets.

When Alec Scott entered the fray, the game was still in the balance, but when he smashed 26 in just 16 balls the game looked out of side for Nomads.

Heath grabbed a second wicket bowling Henry Bellm and Middleton-Payne sent Collyer back to the pavilion caught and bowled.

It was left to Hemblade and Joe Marsh to see Brighton and Hove home, and the pair batted with composure knock off the runs with three overs and two balls to spare.
