PRESTON Nomads Cricket Club’s Under-14s got an early taste of Winter as a magical spell gave Worthing Cricket Club a 55-run victory.

Luke Winter’s spell of 5.3 overs (5-9) gave Worthing the win in the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival Under-14 Division A Bowl.

Josh Wood led the way with a fine 39 before he was trapped lbw by Flynn Middleton-Payne.

Will Read saw off William Edgeler for 5 and after another two quick wickets from Middleton-Payne (3-31) Nomads looked on top at 80-5.

But Thomas Armstrong had other ideas and his 45 which included four fours and two maximums pulled Worthing’s total to 140-8 from 31.2 overs.

Nomads’ run chase stuttered, and despite a fine unbeaten 30 by Christian Weatherstone, the home side never really got going.

Alex Mercer made a solid 19 before he was bowled by Daniel Turner while Middleton-Payne got a taste of his own medicine when Finn Wood struck twice to dismiss Nomads’ bowling hero and Nathan Bowden.

The remaining five wickets were all the work of man-of-the-match Luke Winter who ripped through the Nomads tail for just nine runs.
