CARDINAL Newman lifted the Under-12 Brighton, Hove and District Schools Rugby Association Cup after beating Dorothy Stringer 26-14.

The clash at Brighton Rugby Club on Thursday proved to be the perfect warm-up for the finale of the RBS Six Nations try-fest on Saturday.

Stringer led 14-7 going into the break, but a resurgent Newman team hit back with 19 unanswered points in the second half to run out comfortable winners.

The association’s secretary John Tolhurst said: “This was an exciting and close game with a very high standard of rugby from both sides.

“Dorothy Stringer looked in command at the end of the first half and scored two converted tries to make for an interval lead of seven points.

“In the second half it was Cardinal Newman who got on top and scored the first try to equalise.

“Then a draw looked a probability.

“This was not to be and Cardinal Newman finished the game with two further tries, one converted, for a winning margin of 26-14.”
