STUDENT S made sure a charity was caked with positivity as they celebrated a 25th anniversary.

Sussex Downs College Level Three Patisserie students baked celebratory cakes for the 25th Anniversary of the charity Care for the Carers at The View Hotel in Eastbourne.

The youngsters used their final products from assessments in sugar work and cake production for the celebratory cakes.

Students designed and created cakes individually, working competitively to win the title of best cake and the winner’s cake and a cup-cake design baked by Molly Battle, became the centrepiece.

Christina Cavallari, curriculum leader for catering and hospitality courses at Sussex Downs College, was thrilled when she was approached with the possibility of her students making the cakes for the anniversary afternoon tea.

She said: “I am incredibly proud of how our students and lecturer Valentine Rodrigues embraced the challenge to support this community event.

“The students’ creativity and focus excelled with some students arriving at college at 7.15am to commence the challenge.

“So much was learnt about the precision of patisserie products and excellent assessments were achieved.”

The students delivered the cakes, ensuring their delectable bakes were pride of place on the refreshments tables.

Kate Glover, information officer for Care for the Carers, was extremely impressed by the level of professionalism shown by the patisserie students.

She said: “The cakes looked amazing and we are incredibly grateful to the Sussex Downs College students who have put such care and attention into their beautiful creations.

“It is great to see the youth of our community getting involved in supporting charities such as Care for the Carers.

“Many young people do not get the opportunity to become engaged with, and made aware of, such an important aspect of so many people’s lives in our local communities.”
