A Euro MP convicted of benefit fraud has been labelled a hypocrite after accusing immigrants of burdening British taxpayers.

Ashley Mote released the 46-page pamphlet J'Accuse after he was jailed for nine months in September last year for falsely claiming £67,000 in benefits.

It claimed the benefits system which he defrauded "pours money into foreign pockets".

Mr Mote claimed £32,000 in income support and £35,000 in housing benefit from Chichester District Council when he failed to declare he was earning £4,000 a month.

The MEP for South East England was found guilty of 21 offences connected with benefit fraud.

He has appealed against both his criminal conviction and the finding that the benefits were overpayments and must be repaid.

Mr Mote, 71, who is now out of jail, is awaiting the ruling of the criminal appeal court but civil appeal judges ruled last December he must repay the £67,000.

The father-of-two sits as an independent after he was thrown out of UKIP when they learned he faced criminal charges.

Nick Johnson, director of policy at the Institute of Community Cohesion, said it was "ironic" and "hypocritical".

He said: "He talks about people coming into the country and taking benefits that should be for people who are born here.

"He says it's unfair that these people are changing the British way of life, that these people are taking services which should be reserved for native born people.

"It's hypocritical as well as distasteful and unhelpful.

"He should worry about his own actions rather than misleading the country about other people."

Mr Mote was not available for comment.

Its called Piggies in the trough.
When are we going to get a system where its impossible to work and get benefit. Surely the PAYE tax system has a computer that could cross check with the Benefits computers.

Because Mike, these people don't pay tax - it's all cash-in-hand, no questions asked.

The assumption is nowadays that every paid politician is corrupt and lining their pockets at the taxpayer's expense. We need some openness in government that allows us, the people who pay their salaries and expenses, to see where that money is being spent. Instead we have them exempting themselves from the Freedom Of Information Act to hide their crooked deals. The corridors of power stink with the smell of corruption.

Although actually the Freedom of Information Act exemption didn't happen in the end.

This story of fraud just about sums up the whole corrupt dictatorial EU fiasco and, we should get out of Europe NOW, RIGHT NOW.

This story of fraud sums up a corrupt individual who presumably as a previous member of UKIP based his time at brussels complaining about EU corruption. Its not a reason to leave the EU anymore than corrupt MPs mean we should leave...er great britain. He isnt the first politician to be caught with double standards. I hope he declined his MEP salary whilst in jail as he can't have been serving the good burghers of the south east very well whilst in chokey

Most British MP's are corrupt and only interested in feathering their own nests. Look at the latest disgusting debacle with the subsidised canteen and bar at Westminster where a bottle of good bubbly can be bought for just £5! and it is us the tax payer who is subsidising these useless morons. As for the Brighton Argus I think this newspaper has become sucked into the crony left media circle. Sorry Argus but you aren't the impartial newspaper you used to be.

To the Editor, for publication if you wish...

You are wrong to say I was not available for comment. My mobile number was on the end of the press release about J'Accuse and you did not call.

As for the opinions you publish, we are all entitled to our views. Quite what the connection is between my case and the booklet is difficult to see, given that I have long ago made a public statement saying I did not defraud the state - nor would I.

My legal team is now preparing an appeal to the House of Lords for precisely that reason.

Meanwhile, I was elected to help get us out of the EU and I'm determined to carry on.

Trying to stop me by accusing me of benefit fraud didn't work.

Ask yourself...why did the British government spend over a million pounds of public money on a five week trial over an alleged £45,000 overpayment of benefit over seven years, when I was flat broke? And it all happened a decade ago.

It even took them six years to put a case together.

Come on...think about it.

given the remoteness of the offence, Nick Johnson's remarks are crap. It gives hyporacy a bad name.

If you really are Ashley Mote then for sheer brass neck your comments really do take some beating.

Is "it cost alot of money and happened a long time ago " really the best you can do?

You're a disgrace and a hypocrite.

Because you took Britain to the EU court because you tried to claim immunity as an MEP from prosecution?

You tried every legal trick in the book to postpone the court case.

You defrauded the taxpayer.

You cost the taxpayer further money with your legal manouvering.

You are a convicted benefit fraudster.

At the next elections you will be chucked out by the voters you disgraceful benefit cheat.

You stole public money. That is why you ended up in jail. You are a benefit cheat pure and simple.
