The Nintendo Wii fitness craze is at the centre of a massive fraud investigation.

Police and trading standards officials believe Brighton and Hove is the base for an internet scam which has cost shoppers across the country tens of thousands of pounds.

Online store Zavvi Direct Ltd has been accused of ripping off customers by posing as being connected to Zavvi Entertainments - the firm which took over Virgin Megastores including the branch in Churchill Square, Brighton, last year.

Zavvi Direct is now being investigated by Sussex Police's economic crime unit and trading standards after complaints the company has taken hundreds of payments for the £69.99 Nintendo Wii Fit game over the internet but has not delivered any of the items.

The firm is registered as being based at Suite 16, 20 Old Steine, Brighton.

But any customers visiting the property, which is also the given address of the registered company secretary, Steven McClelland, 23, will find an empty single room in the converted terrace with just a piece of paper with the name Zavvi Limited taped to the door.
