MID Sussex MP Sir Nicholas Soames has had the flu jab as part of a campaign urging people to get themselves vaccinated this winter.

He was one of several MPs to be given the vaccine as part of Westminster Flu Day on Wednesday.

The campaign, organised by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, is aimed at targeting vulnerable people at risk from serious complications from the bug but who have yet to take up the offer of the vaccine.

Around 55 per cent of people with a serious medical condition, 30 per cent of people over the age of 65, 65 per cent of preschool children, 50 per cent of healthcare workers, and 60 per cent of pregnant women did not have a flu vaccine last year in England.

This is despite the fact the consequences of not being protected can be serious for these groups.

Every year, an estimated 12,000 people die from seasonal flu in England and Wales.
