A COUPLE will celebrate their successful surgery by getting married.

After years of struggling with their eyesight Joy Roscoe and Cliff Miles have both had specialist lens implants inserted which have transformed their lives.

The couple are marking their new clear-sightedness by tying the knot in May.

Mr Miles, 68, and Ms Roscoe, 69, from Pevensey, near Eastbourne, have a history of eyesight problems in their families.

Both needed varifocal lenses in their glasses to be able to see properly but found them difficult to manage.

They decided to take action by arranging to have specialist lens implants inserted at the London Eye Hospital, meaning they could throw away their glasses.

Ms Roscoe began wearing varifocal lenses at the age of 51 and was also starting to show signs of developing a cataract.

She said: “I hated the varifocal lenses.

“I have a small face and they didn’t suit my face shape. They are also really heavy on the nose and got in the way.

“Given my family’s history I didn’t want to risk the same thing happening to me and I know how quickly eyesight can deteriorate.”

Mr Miles’ problems began when he started doing office work which put a strain on his eyes.

At 46 he started wearing varifocals but he found them hard to use and it was difficult to focus properly when he wore them for driving.

Mr Miles said: “I also have a family history of vision problems which was a worry.

“My dad was registered blind and my mum was blind in one eye, so I thought my vision might go the same way.

“The treatment is one of the best things I’ve ever done.

“Driving has been the most startling improvement and my vision is getting better all the time.”

Ms Roscoe said: “We now have 20/20 vision and it’s wonderful to go from squinting to be able to see clearly.”

A spokesman for the London Eye Hospital said the results of the surgery would last a lifetime.

He said: “We are delighted that having the procedure together means Joy and Cliff can now enjoy their wedding and we wish them all the best.”
