A WOMAN who lost almost all of her right lung because of cancer has successfully carried out a 100 metre abseil.

Jacqui Campbell, from Worthing, took on the challenge to raise money for the town’s St Barnabas House Hospice.

Mrs Campbell, 58, was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and had to undergo various types of treatment, including surgery.

She had to temporarily give up volunteering for the hospice during this time.

However when she heard about a sponsored abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, Mrs Campbell decided to get involved.

She said: “At the beginning of the year, when the abseil came up on my Facebook feed, I thought it would be a challenge for me, having kicked cancer.

“I could put back what I have missed with St Barnabas.

“They have looked after several friends of mine over the years and they are the most amazing place.

“Worthing doesn’t know how lucky it is to have somewhere like St Barnabas.

“I’m lucky because I didn’t need St Barnabas – I’m here to talk about it.

“We’ve lost so many people who have had to go there and they’ve been so well looked after, so we just count ourselves lucky.

“It was exhilarating and I’m so pleased that I did it.

“I found stepping out at the top really, really scary and I did think do I want to do this.

“However then I thought just get on with it.”

Mrs Campbell has managed to raise £840 so far and donations can still be made.

A total of 44 people, many of who have had friends or members of family cared for by the hospice, took part in the abseiling event last month.

While the final overall fundraising total will not be confirmed until all sponsorship is received by the hospice, it is expected to reach around the £13,000 mark.

Hospice events fundraiser Bella Cripps said: “We are so grateful to everyone who took part in the abseil day and has helped to raise an incredible amount of money for the hospice so far.

“We have been overwhelmed with the interest we have received since we first advertised the abseils and have sold out a second day on Sunday, June 11.

“Due to the huge amount of interest we have had, we are looking into holding another day of abseiling in the near future.”
