THERE’S little doubt the beach huts along the Sussex coast are a real institution.

On paper they shouldn’t work.

They are tiny little sheds with no electricity and have a tendency to blow over in high winds.

Yet these buildings are lovingly cared for by their owners and the long waiting lists to get one are testament to their enduring popularity.

Whether along busy locations like Hove seafront, or quieter areas like Ferring, near Worthing, these huts are often painted in eye catching different colours and can stand out even on the most dullest and wettest of days.

And when the weather improves and the owners come out to relax, there is the chance to see some wonderfully elaborate decorations and designs.

The Argus:

Some sheds are simply decorated and just used as a changing room or a storage area for buckets, spades and chairs.

But others can be lavishly fitted out with carpets, mirrors and rugs and provide a little home away from others.

For some owners it’s all about a chance to get away and relax in their own little space while enjoying the sea views in front of them.

For others it is a way to socialise and catch up and watch the world go by.

But whether a beach hut is a place to escape or contemplate or somewhere to take it easy and get together with friends or relatives, it’s clear these little huts are very important for the people who use them.

Lesley McBride uses her beach hut in Hove as part of an art club.

She said: “You are painting the same scene but obviously it changes with the weather. It gives us outside space, it’s lovely."

Wynford Baker, from Hove, believes some visitors are a bit bemused by the beach huts but is part of their charm.

He said: “They think it’s a bit eccentric. My fair-weather friends come down from London and absolutely love it.

"Even in a cold spring, if you are out of the sun it’s still warm."

The joy of a beach hut is how people can decorate it to their taste.

Keen Formula 1 fan Helen Arnettt has painted the doors of her in British racing green.

She said: "I would like to think it looks stylish. I like to use mine all the year round, whenever possible."
