NIGHT time road works will aim to reduce queuing traffic at one of Brighton's busiest junctions.

Highways engineers have been working to improve where Lewes Road meets Elm Grove and Union Road since the end of August.

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said the aim of the improvements is to prevent traffic queuing at red lights from obstructing vehicles trying to pass on a green light.

Other changes will seek to improve the pedestrian and cycle route between Lewes Road, Elm Grove and the Level, where cyclists tend to use pavements to avoid difficult turning movements.

For five days from Monday November 20 for five days, new road surfacing and markings will be installed.

Certain junctions will be closed between 8pm and 5.30am.

• On Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st – no entry or exit between Lewes Road and Union Road

• On Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd - no entry or exit between Lewes Road and Elm Grove

No work is scheduled to take place on Friday 24th but the evening has been reserved in case bad weather causes an overrun.

Signed diversions will be in place and drivers urged to find alternative routes. Pedestrian routes will be maintained at all times. Bus journeys could be affected after 8pm and passengers should check with operators.

A letter has been sent to residents and businesses in the area, warning of the works.
