A MAN has been rescued and resuscitated following a fire in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to the flat in Crisp Road, Lewes, shortly after 2.30am.

Three fire crews from Lewes and Barcombe battled the blaze.  Firefighters rescued a 56-year-old man who was found unconscious in the kitchen, having apparently sustained burns and the effects of smoke inhalation.

Paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service took over and helped to resuscitate the man, before taking him to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, for further treatment.

His condition was not thought to be life-threatening and he was later transferred to the burns unit at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

Three other flats in the same block were evacuated while the incident was dealt with.

The scene of the fire was examined by police and fire investigators. The cause is currently being treated as unexplained but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

Crisp Road and Fitzroy Road were closed to traffic while the incident was dealt with.
