THE funeral of an Albion super fan and campaigner will be held tomorrow.

Friends, fans and fellow Seagulls supporters will say an emotional goodbye to Ed Bassford, who died peacefully at his home on Friday after a long battle with cancer, at his funeral at 2pm at Firle church.

Mr Bassford was a key member of the Falmer For All campaign and stood in local elections for the Seagulls Party.

Fellow fan John Baine, aka Attila the Stockbroker, described Mr Bassford as a “hero” and said he was the fourth of 20 key campaigners for the future of the club to have now died.

Donations in his memory are invited to St Peter and St James’ Hospice and should be sent to Grace Independent Funeral Directors, 74 Springett Ave, Ringmer, Lewes BN8 5QX.

Paying tribute, Paul Samrah, a fellow Falmer for All campaign member, said: “Ed was a very earnest and intelligent man, who knew how to talk to both senior politicians and your ordinary football fan.

“When it came to the public inquiries during the planning process, the city council or our opponents would release press statements that, at first glance, appeared to provide a hammer blow to our chances, but Ed was able to give a very logical and easily understandable explanation of what was happening, that would calm the fans down and stop any panic setting in. Ed was also a driving force behind the campaign initiatives.”
