An audience filled a landmark arts venue for the final time in its 38 year history last night.
A packed house watched the curtain come down at the Gardner Arts Centre, at the University of Sussex in Falmer, Brighton, for the last time at the end of a performance by a Hip Hop theatre company.
The centre, set up as a contemporary arts venue in 1969, has been forced to close because of a lack of funding.
Its management needed £6 million to pay for repairs to the Grade II listed buildings in order to secure arts council grants. Funding from Brighton and Hove City Council had been withdrawn and the centre suffered from increased competition in the city.
The 480-seat venue was one of the first at an English university campus. It held more than 300 events each year.
The university has not yet decided what will happen to the buildings.
