A former DJ is customising the iconic Action Man doll - turning the toy into a portable stereo system.

Lawrence Latham, of Wilbury Road, Hove, has fitted the macho figures with speakers and a dock for MP3 players.

The gadgets - selling for up to £190 - are then coated with layers of clay and foam and finished with fluffy material bought from chaity shops.

Each creation - named vikings - took a month to make.

There are several different characters including a scarlet 'little red devil', a camouflage soldier, a pink- Bagpuss and a comic-book Black Knight.

Lawrence, who also teaches animation and digital design, said: "One day I just thought 'I am sick of listening to music I love through my headphones'.

"I wanted to look at and feel the music as well and thought it would be nice to make a toy to listen to it through. I like the idea that speakers, and so music, can be like friends.

"There is something lovely about plugging your iPod into one of the creatures and see and hear it come to life."

What began as a personal toy soon became a music-lovers craze and through word of mouth Lawrence has received several commissions.

He is also exhibiting the unusual creatures as part of there Brighton Festival Fringe's Open House.

The teacher said his gadgets have been particularly popular as gifts for DJs and people working in the music industry who are already passionate about their tunes.

He said: "People seem to see it as a very unique gift for people who love music.

"There is even a rumour that Norman Cook himself would like one. If so I would be happy to make him one and customise it to suit him."
